When the mountain world is swathed in vibrant autumnal colours and the summer heat is over, hikers will find the very best conditions in the mountains of Zillertal.
Here are some particularly beautiful autumn hiking tours in Zillertal:
COLOURFUL DIVERSITY AT PFITSCHER JOCH This hike starts at Schlegeis Reservoir, which can be reached by public bus or car (toll-fee) from Mayrhofen via Ginzling. Right from the start of the tour, you are presented with a magnificent display of colour: the turquiose waters of the reservoir, combined with the white glacier and the wonderfully vibrant leaves of the forests abound. Although you are in high alpine terrain, the hiking trail with large stone slabs and easy steps is easily negotiable for the whole family. It takes around one and a half hours to walk uphill alongside rushing waterfalls to the Lavitzalm at 2,090 metres, from where you will need another half an hour to reach Pfitscher Joch, where you can enjoy fabulous views of South Tyrol. After a taking a welcome break at Pfitscherjochhaus, follow the same route back to your original starting point. <<<Go to route
AUTUMN HIKE IN STILLUPTAL Not only can mountain peaks be conquered in golden autumn, there is also much to discover near the valley floor. A hike along the Stilluptal Waterfall Trail leads through forests and meadows and promises breathtaking views of the numerous waterfalls and Stillupspeicher Reservoir. The carpark at Gasthof Wasserfall is the start and finish point alike (accessible via the toll road by car or bus). Follow the well-signposted trail from there. The first place to stop for refreshments along the hike is Stilluperhaus, where you will find numerous homemade dishes and refreshing drinks on the menu. The trail then continues gently uphill to the Grünen Wand Hut. After a leisurely break, you can take the same route back to your original starting on foot, or by bus. <<< Go to route
AUTUMN HIKE TO ZIMMEREBEN Gasthaus Zimmereben is located just above Mayrhofen. There are several ways to get to this beautiful alpine inn with fantastic views over Mayrhofen. You can either take the somewhat steeper Huterlanerweg trail – which will take around 30 minutes. or the Mariensteig trail, which is a less demanding ascent. Those who prefer to scale rocky faces, will feel right at home on one of the four via ferratas that end near Gasthaus Zimmereben. This hike is ideal as a half-day activity. <<<Go to route
